Summary/Background:
The function of an airport apron is to accommodate aircraft during loading and unloading of passengers and/or cargo. Activities such as fueling, maintenance, and short to long-term parking take place on the apron. There are two aircraft parking aprons serving the Taos Regional Airport. The East Apron is approximately 11,500 SY with 24 tie-downs while the West Apron is 8,560 SY with 9 tie downs.
The existing airport apron condition has been steadily deteriorating over the last 20 years and shows extensive deep cracking . NMDoT-A periodically performs a Pavement Condition Index which indicates the condition of the pavement. The PCI ratings are from 1-100 with the high end indicating good conditions and the lower end as poor conditions. The PCI Index groupings are as follows:
0-40 - Reconstruction
41-55 - Major Rehabilitation
56-70 - Major Rehabilitation/Preventative Maintenance
71-85 - Preventative Maintenance - Light Preventative Maintenance
86-100 - Preventative Maintenance
In 2016, the East Apron scored a 62 and NMDoT's current analysis showed a drop to 60 for 2022 while the West Apron scored a 57 in 2016 and dropped to 55 in 2022.
Beginning on the west side (the side with the most deterioration), the project is divided into four phases/areas:
Area 1 West side - (in front of the FBO) - Estimated construction cost of $1,400,000
Area 2 - Estimated construction cost - $1,500,000
Area 3 - $1,200,000 - Estimated construction cost $1,200,000
Area 4 - East side - Estimated construction cost of $2,200,000
The grant will be utilized for Phase 1 (Area 1) and is fully funded at 100%, requiring no match.
