Summary/Background:
The G.R.I.P. (Gang Resistance is Powerful), modeled after a best practice national program developed by Mr. Tony Ostos, a gang prevention specialist in Los Angeles, California, was launched in Taos in 2011 to address and prevent delinquency, youth violence and gang membership. The program has reached between 500 and 700 youth annually and has received funding from the Children, Youth and Family Department since 2011. The Taos Independent School District specifically requested the G.R.I.P. program, along with an anti-bullying program, to be part of the classroom curriculum due to the high number of bullying and gang-related incidents. Unexpectedly, CYFD elected not to fund the GRIP program for FY 19-20. The Resolution is to show support of the program and to request reconsideration of the funding decision.
